Rosie in Action: Captain Annesha Umbarger

Captain Annesha Umbarger is the first woman to achieve that rank within the history of the Springfield Police Department. Her curiosity and collaborative spirit of service have been just a few of the guiding forces that led her to this distinguished position, where she continues to serve as an inspiration for women in her field. Keep reading to hear what Captain Umbarger had to share about her career journey and inspiring advice for fellow Rosies looking to make an impact right where they are!

Who is Captain Annesha Umbarger?

I am Captain Annesha Umbarger with the Springfield Police Department, where I have served for over 18 years in roles ranging from patrol to investigations. Currently, I oversee our Crime Analysis Unit, Records Division, and our Police Academy. I am actively involved in the community, serving on the executive boards for the Salvation Army and Harmony House, and participating in Special Olympics events in the Springfield area. I have a wonderful husband, who is also retired from law enforcement, and together we are proud parents of two children. We enjoy coaching our kids’ sports teams and being active in community activities.

What was your journey to your current role like? What influenced you to pursue a career in public service?

My journey began before I became a police officer. I joined the Army National Guard at seventeen, where I served as a Blackhawk helicopter mechanic for eight years while also working full-time at the airport. At 25, I explored a new career path and did a ride-along with a Springfield Police officer. I was immediately hooked—I loved the para-military structure, the variety of job functions, and the unique ways I could help people. From that moment, I knew law enforcement was my calling.

How has your leadership style been influenced by your experiences at the local, regional, and national levels?

My leadership style has evolved over time. Early on, it was more autocratic, reflecting my military background, where orders were followed without question. Through leadership training at the local, state, and national levels, I learned that a more balanced approach is effective. Today, I am a situational leader: in high-stress situations, decisiveness is critical, but most of the time I lead with a democratic or transformational style that adapts to my team’s needs and the task at hand.

How has your involvement with local organizations impacted your career?

Being involved in these organizations has broadened my perspective on the larger ecosystem that works together to serve our community. Collaboration provides access to more resources, knowledge, and solutions than any single agency could achieve alone. Working as a team has strengthened my ability to problem-solve and make a greater impact.

Why do you believe it’s important for women to get involved in leadership roles in their communities and industries?

Perspective. Women bring unique experiences, skills, and insights that might otherwise be absent from decision-making tables. Having diverse voices ensures our communities and organizations are served more fully and effectively.

Share a piece of advice or inspiration for fellow Rosies thinking about joining a board or committee or plugging into an organization they are passionate about.

If an opportunity presents itself—take it! This is true for life in general. You have to create opportunities for yourself; no one else will do it for you. Do things for the right reasons. Along the way, you will build confidence, gain valuable experience, and develop a network of friends and colleagues who can support you in the future.
